Agricultural sector in Spain faces pest threats and new infrastructure developments
The agricultural association Coexphal has called on the Junta de Andalucía to implement mandatory measures to combat the Thrips parvispinus pest. The organization is demanding a ‘zero sweeping’ policy for agricultural waste in rural areas and the creation of a reporting channel for abandoned farms that pose phytosanitary risks. Additionally, Coexphal is requesting compensatory aid for farms that suffer production losses of more than 30% due to the insect.
In a separate development, the Junta de Andalucía has approved a plan to construct water reservoirs in the provinces of Salamanca and Zamora as part of the 2023-2027 CAP Strategic Plan. The project aims to support extensive livestock farming and includes infrastructure such as hydraulic systems, hydrants for agricultural use, and fire-fighting equipment. Prioritized municipalities in Salamanca include Fuentes de Oroño, San Felices de los Gallegos, Hinojosa de Duero, and Monleón.
Meanwhile, Casa Mediterráneo, in collaboration with the University of Alicante, has implemented a 3D digital modeling project to improve the conservation of the historic Benalúa railway station. Using Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM), the project allows for better detection of structural issues and more efficient long-term maintenance planning.
