Agricultural sectors face disease risks and feed supply volatility

In Vinh Long, Vietnam, agricultural authorities are intensifying disease prevention measures for livestock as demand for meat and eggs rises toward the end of the year. The province is seeing a shift toward large-scale, closed-loop farming models to manage increasing herd sizes, which include approximately 912,000 pigs, 465,000 cattle, and 25 million poultry by late 2026. Increased animal movement and changing weather patterns have heightened the risk of spreading diseases, prompting enhanced monitoring, vaccination programs, and slaughterhouse controls.

Globally, the aquaculture industry faces significant challenges regarding feed security due to supply tensions in fishmeal and fish oil. In Peru, the world's largest fishmeal producer, local fishing bans to protect juvenile fish have constrained raw material availability. Additionally, fish oil production is projected to hit a decade-low, with nearly 40% of the global supply being diverted to the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. Declining inventories in Chinese ports and rising prices for Peruvian fishmeal have further pressured the aquaculture feed market.
