Spain wine sector faces shifting consumption and regional challenges
The Spanish wine sector is experiencing a complex period of structural change and economic shifts. In Cuenca, the Castilla-La Mancha government has disbursed nearly one million euros to modernize 304 hectares of vineyards, benefiting 105 viticulturists through restructuring and reconversion grants.
However, other regions face significant challenges. In the interior of Castellón and Valencia, the AVA-ASAJA association has called for urgent aid as drought and high temperatures cause crop losses in grapes, almonds, and olives, while forcing livestock farmers to pay for water transport and supplemental feed.
On a national scale, the industry shows mixed results. While Spanish wineries achieved a record turnover of 8,567 million euros in 2024, domestic wine consumption has fallen to 9.1 million hectoliters, approaching historic lows. This decline is accompanied by a shift in consumer preferences toward white, young, and lower-alcohol wines.
