Agricultural shifts reported in Belgium and Netherlands fruit harvests

Agricultural producers in Belgium and the Netherlands are reporting significant shifts in fruit harvests due to weather patterns. In Geel, Belgium, fruit grower Jef Helsen of Fruit Helsen reported a record-early pear harvest. Driven by a warm spring, the first Conference pears were harvested significantly earlier than the typical September start. While the fruit is noted for high sugar content due to a sunny summer, the lack of rain has resulted in smaller fruit sizes. Helsen expects a total yield reduction of 15 to 20 percent compared to last year.

In the Netherlands, Berryland reports a transition in the blueberry market. Following quality issues and frost damage in Poland, supermarkets are shifting to Peruvian imports. However, concerns are rising regarding future supply; ongoing heatwaves in Peru may limit flower production, potentially leading to a shortage of Peruvian blueberries between January and March. Additionally, heatwaves have impacted raspberry supplies in Europe, though imports from Mexico have helped stabilize availability.
