Agricultural studies examine soil management in Paraná and Bahia
Agricultural research in Brazil is focusing on soil management and its impact on productivity and sustainability. In Paraná, a study by the Rede Paranaense de Agropesquisa e Formação Aplicada, funded by Sistema Faep and Fundação Araucária, is examining how climate, texture, and conservation practices influence soil fertility. The research, which includes experimental areas across several regions such as Northwest, North, and South, aims to provide better recommendations for nutrient storage and plant development, with consolidated results expected by 2029.
In Western Bahia, research has investigated the impact of irrigated versus rainfed cotton cultivation on soil organic carbon (SOC) levels in sandy soils within the MATOPIBA region. Utilizing MapBiomas data and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, the study found that soil texture is a more decisive factor in carbon dynamics than irrigation systems. Specifically, in highly homogeneous sandy soils, there were no statistically significant differences in SOC levels between irrigated and rainfed systems, suggesting that irrigation does not necessarily promote greater carbon loss in these environments.
