Agricultural studies highlight carbon reduction and soil regeneration techniques

A study conducted by Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), with support from Mosaic and Itaú, indicates that integrating mineral fertilizers with biological solutions can improve agricultural efficiency in Brazil. Research involving hybrid fertilizers applied to soybean crops showed an 8.8% increase in productivity, rising from 57.8 to 62.1 bags per hectare. This technological integration also resulted in a 5.25% reduction in carbon intensity per bag produced, lowering emissions from 20.97 kgCO2e to 19.87 kgCO2e.

In Portugal, the Polytechnic University of Portalegre (UPP) has launched the “CoverPlus” project to combat soil erosion caused by extreme weather events. The initiative, which runs until August 2028, focuses on soil regeneration through direct seeding, the use of organic fertilizers, and cover crops. The project aims to protect soil during periods of intense heat or heavy rainfall by utilizing grass varieties such as oats, triticale, millet, Sudan grass, and sorghum in crop rotations.
