Agricultural tips for harvesting and preserving produce

Proper harvesting and storage techniques are essential to prevent the loss of vegetable and fruit supplies. To ensure long-term preservation in cellars, only healthy, undamaged, and appropriately ripe produce should be stored. Even a single decaying item can cause rot to spread quickly through a container. Different crops require specific environments; for example, onions and pumpkins need dry locations, while carrots and celery require higher humidity.

Harvesting conditions also play a role, as collecting produce on dry days helps prevent fungal diseases. It is recommended to avoid washing produce immediately before storage to prevent excess moisture.

Regarding tomatoes, all fruit—including green ones—should be harvested by the end of September to protect them from cold night temperatures. Green tomatoes can be ripened indoors by placing them in paper bags with bananas or in cardboard boxes with ripe apples, as these fruits release ethylene gas. Removing stems from green tomatoes can also help prevent moisture buildup and rot.
