Agricultural trends show shifting production strategies in Bolivia and Argentina

In Santa Cruz, Bolivia, the 2026-2027 summer agricultural campaign has commenced with approximately 40,000 hectares planted, primarily consisting of soy, corn, and sorghum. Jaime Hernández, manager of the Association of Oilseed and Wheat Producers (ANAPO), noted that while soil moisture has allowed machinery to enter fields in areas like Okinawa, progress remains dependent on upcoming rainfall. High production, harvesting, and transport costs are raising concerns that some producers may reduce their planted areas or switch activities.

In Argentina, the fifth Agricultural Producer Needs Survey (ENPA 2025) conducted by Universidad Austral reveals a significant shift in land management. The proportion of producers leasing farmland has dropped from 80% in 2009 to 57% in 2025. While smaller-scale producers are opting for intensive activities within existing holdings rather than competing for leased land, larger establishments of over 10,000 hectares project a 31% increase in worked surface area over the next five years. The survey, covering 842 producers across Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe, and Entre Ríos, also indicates growing interest in livestock, machinery, and technology over soy expansion.
