Agricultural waste levels surge in South Korea
South Korea is facing a significant surge in agricultural waste, with approximately 895,513 tons of waste plastic film and over 235 million pesticide containers generated between 2022 and 2024. Data released by National Assembly member Yoon Jun-byeong reveals that the Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do regions recorded the highest amount of waste plastic film among major agricultural municipalities, totaling about 45,000 tons.
Pesticide container waste has shown a notable increase, rising 16.2% from 2023 to 2024. The accumulation of these materials poses serious environmental risks, including soil and water contamination from residual pesticides, as well as increased wildfire risks due to illegal incineration.
Criticism has been directed at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs for allegedly failing to take full responsibility, instead deferring management to local governments and the Ministry of Environment. Lawmakers are calling for a comprehensive management system, including the expansion of collection hubs and dedicated infrastructure to improve recovery rates and protect rural environments.
