Agricultural yields face declines in Morocco and Europe
Agricultural sectors in Morocco and Northwest Europe are facing significant production challenges for the 2026 season due to climate-related factors.
In Morocco’s Souss-Massa region, the 2026-2027 tomato campaign is under pressure from water supply issues and intense summer heat. Estimates suggest a 10% to 15% reduction in land dedicated to round tomatoes, with the winter cycle potentially delayed by up to 15 days. This follows a period of declining exports, where Morocco Foodex reported an 11% drop in agri-food exports by April 2026, impacting traditional markets in Europe and the United Kingdom.
Simultaneously, potato producers in the North-East European Potato Group (NEPG) zone—comprising Belgium, Germany, France, and the Netherlands—are anticipating a historically low harvest. Total consumption potato production for 2026 is estimated at 20.7 million tonnes, a 25.4% decrease from 2025. In France, production is expected to drop by 21.5%. Heatwaves and drought during July and August have resulted in smaller tuber sizes, complicating supply for industrial sectors requiring specific calibers.
