Agriculture crisis: Feed shortages force cattle slaughter in Germany and Switzerland

Farmers in Germany and Switzerland are facing a severe livestock crisis driven by heatwaves and prolonged droughts, leading to significant feed shortages. In southern Germany, particularly in Baden-Württemberg, feed availability is reported to be 30 to 40 percent lower than usual. This shortage is forcing some farmers to slaughter cattle prematurely as they struggle to sustain their herds through the winter.

In response to the crisis, authorities in Stuttgart and Munich have declared a state of emergency under EU organic law, allowing for relaxed regulations regarding organic feed.

In Switzerland, the situation is compounded by economic pressures on farmers. Due to the climate crisis, cattle are appearing thinner, categorized as ‘Category X’ animals. Major slaughterhouses, including Bell and Micarna, have reduced the prices paid for these emaciated animals. Farmers and political representatives have criticized this move, accusing the industry of exploiting the emergency situation and failing to show solidarity with suppliers facing unavoidable herd reductions.
