Drought and heatwaves trigger agricultural crisis in Austria and Germany

Severe drought and extreme heatwaves across Austria and Germany are causing significant agricultural distress and water shortages. In Austria, sugar beet yields in Upper Austria are expected to drop by approximately 30 percent due to a lack of rainfall during the primary growing season. Farmers in regions like Vöcklabruck report precipitation deficits of over 90 percent, forcing some to consider reducing livestock numbers or purchasing external fodder.

In Germany, particularly in Bavaria, the situation is equally critical. Soil moisture levels in southern and central Bavaria are experiencing heavy to extreme drought, with some areas seeing no rainfall for a week. Grain harvests have also suffered; Bavarian grain yields fell by roughly 13 percent compared to the previous year, with winter wheat seeing a decline of nearly 25 percent.

Beyond agriculture, the environmental impact is widespread. In Vorarlberg, Austria, meteorologists noted record-breaking heat, with some locations recording unprecedented temperatures. Groundwater levels have reached historic minimums in several areas, and forest soil water reserves are nearly exhausted, increasing the risk of wildfires and threatening long-term water security.
