Agriculture in Germany: Women's roles and 2026 harvest challenges

The Bauernverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has launched the campaign ‘Frauen. Land. Wirtschaft. MV’ to highlight the essential role of women in the regional agricultural sector. The initiative aims to make the achievements of female farmers visible, as they manage farms, employ staff, and represent agricultural interests in political processes. Seven women serve as the faces of the campaign, representing the expertise and entrepreneurial courage required in the industry.

Separately, the 2026 harvest report presented by Federal Minister Alois Rainer indicates that crop yields and quality for rapeseed and grain have fallen below long-term averages. The harvest faced significant challenges due to extreme weather, including a dry spring and summer accompanied by heatwaves. Additionally, the agricultural sector continues to navigate economic pressures stemming from the conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East crisis, which have impacted energy and fertilizer markets, increased production costs, and disrupted supply chains.
