Agriculture ministers from Mexico and Central America agree on regional health protocols
Agriculture and livestock ministers from Mexico, Central America, and the Dominican Republic have agreed to implement coordinated strategies to protect regional phytosanitary and zoosanitary status. The commitment was made during the 97th Extraordinary Meeting of the Regional International Committee for Agricultural Health (CIRSA) held in Guatemala City.
The coordinated effort aims to strengthen prevention, surveillance, containment, and control of transboundary pests and diseases. Key threats identified include African Swine Fever (ASF), banana wilt caused by Fusarium Wilt Tropical Race 4 (R4T), and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.
To safeguard food security, production, and trade, authorities proposed the development of standardized protocols and the establishment of a regional defense line at ports, airports, and land borders.
