Agrigento airport project gains support from Transport Minister Salvini

Italian Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has expressed support for the opening of the Agrigento airport to address air traffic disruptions in Catania and improve Sicilian connectivity.

However, the proposal has drawn criticism from M5S lawmaker Ida Carmina, who argues that the project has been stalled in administrative processes for years despite previous legislative efforts. Carmina called for concrete actions from both the national Ministry and the regional government led by Renato Schifani to resolve existing obstacles.

Sciara Holding, the promoter of the Mela airport project, welcomed Salvini’s stance but highlighted a perceived infrastructure gap in Sicily. The company noted that while northern regions enjoy extensive airport access, Sicily remains underserved, specifically pointing out that Messina lacks any airport infrastructure. Sciara Holding emphasized the need for private funding and more equitable distribution of transport resources between northern and southern Italy.
