Agrigento authorities investigate public contract corruption
Authorities in Agrigento, Italy, are conducting extensive investigations into alleged corruption and irregularities regarding public contracts and institutional control.
A thousand-page dossier from the Agrigento Mobile Squad has been submitted to the Prosecutor's Office, detailing a suspected system designed to manipulate public tenders, appointments, and even local elections within the Libero Consorzio dei Comuni di Agrigento. The investigation, which previously involved the arrest of five individuals and the investigation of 24 others, includes former regional assessor Roberto Di Mauro. Investigators suggest the group aimed to consolidate power by influencing votes and administrative roles.
In a separate but related judicial inquiry, six individuals—including former municipal officials and entrepreneurs—are under investigation for irregularities concerning the ‘San Leone in sicurezza’ project. This project, funded by the Ministry of the Interior, involved a 250,000-euro contract for video surveillance installation. Prosecutors allege that after a Rome-based company was awarded the contract, the work was illegally subcontracted to a firm in Favara without the required authorizations.
