Agrigento coastline faces threat from 140 km of erosion

More than 140 kilometers of coastline in the Agrigento region, including beaches, cliffs, and vital infrastructure such as the Kaos district, are facing significant threats from coastal erosion.

A conference titled ‘L’erosione delle coste nel litorale agrigentino’ is scheduled for September 26 at the Palacongressi in Agrigento to address the situation and identify concrete intervention strategies. Organized by the Order of Architects and the Mediterranean Architects Foundation, the event features experts in environmental management, geology, and urban regeneration.

Alfonso Cimino, president of the architects' order, emphasized the need for urgent intervention from municipal and regional administrations. He noted that protecting the coastline and integrating it with local landscape, archaeological, and historical resources could serve as a major driver for the provincial economy and tourism, particularly for small and tourist ports currently at risk.
