Agrigento consortium clears 235+ tonnes of illegal waste from provincial roads
The Libero Consorzio Comunale di Agrigento continued its road‑cleanup program under the new Italian Road Code, removing more than 235 tonnes of abandoned waste during the first four months of 2026. The haul included over 8 tonnes of asbestos‑containing materials, 37 tonnes of bulky and special waste such as tires and plastic, 4 tonnes of bituminous sheeting, 28 tonnes of demolition debris and 155 tonnes of ordinary solid waste.
The work was carried out on all provincial, former consortium and former regional roads by the contractor Ecorecuperi srl of Caltanissetta, selected through a two‑year framework agreement and coordinated by the consortium’s Environmental Restoration Group. The consortium allocated €400,000 for the 2025‑2026 biennium to fund the operation. President Giuseppe Pendolino warned that illegal waste dumping is now a criminal offence, punishable by license suspension, vehicle seizure and fines up to €20,000, urging citizens to adopt greater civic responsibility.
