Agrigento healthcare crisis highlighted by meningitis case

A 74-year-old patient suffering from meningitis has highlighted critical gaps in the healthcare infrastructure of the Agrigento province. The patient was admitted to the emergency area of the ‘Giovanni Paolo II’ hospital in Sciacca on a Saturday night and is currently receiving pharmacological therapy within a general medicine unit.

The situation underscores a lack of specialized infectious disease departments in the region. While the ‘Fratelli Parlapiano’ hospital in Ribera was intended to become a center of excellence for infectious diseases during the Covid-19 pandemic, the department has failed to materialize. The previous head of the department, infectious disease specialist Fabrizio Pulvirenti, resigned in April 2022, citing severe shortages of specialized medical and sanitary personnel, delays in facility upgrades, and issues with equipment procurement.
