Palermo mayor hands over final apartments rebuilt after 2023 fire

On 6 August 2026 the municipal administration of Palermo completed the reconstruction of the Via Erice 31 block, delivering the last three apartments to families displaced by the July 2023 fire. The hand‑over was attended by Mayor Roberto Lagalla, Public Works Assessor Salvatore Orlando, Council President Giulio Tantillo and district president Andrea Aiello.

The renovation, the fifth contract under the public‑housing maintenance framework, began on 19 July 2024, with actual works starting 11 October 2024 and concluding on 3 August 2026. The construction cost €531,441.67, while the total project expense reached €743,671.33, financed from the municipal budget. The project was overseen by geom. Luigi Birriola, designed by architect Dario La Guardia with structural consultancy from the University of Palermo, and engineered by Giuseppe Campione. Execution was carried out by contractor CONPAT S.C. and subcontractors CELI ENERGIA, DIBIGA, with fittings supplied by 3Z Serramenti. The private firm Fortezza donated part of the installed windows, accelerating completion.

The delivery follows an earlier phase in April 2025 when the first five apartments were handed over, restoring full occupancy to the block after the fire that had rendered the building unsafe and uninhabitable.
