Agrigento prosecutors seek indictment of 22 in citizenship fraud probe

The Prosecutor's Office of Agrigento has requested the indictment of 22 individuals involved in a corruption investigation regarding the fraudulent acquisition of Italian citizenship by Brazilian citizens. The investigation alleges a system of administrative irregularities and corruption used to facilitate citizenship through descent.

According to prosecutors, the scheme involved accelerating bureaucratic processes through the use of false residency certificates and the failure to conduct necessary inspections. The alleged illicit activities took place across several municipalities in the province of Agrigento, including Naro, Camastra, Comitini, Porto Empedocle, and Siculiana.

The suspects include local officials, such as the Mayor of Camastra, Dario Gaglio, and various local police inspectors and registry office employees. Other individuals facing charges include agency owners, lawyers, and Brazilian citizens. The charges include forgery, disclosure of official secrets, corruption, and aiding illegal immigration. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 13 at the Agrigento courthouse.
