Agrigento province faces acute water shortage as mayors demand emergency supply

Mayors from several municipalities in the province of Agrigento met with regional Minister of Energy, Water and Waste, Francesco Colianni, urging an increase in water allocations for the summer months. They warned that failure to secure additional water from the monopoly provider Siciliacque S.p.A. would be a "crime against humanity" and said they are prepared to take further action, including delivering the Italian flag to the regional president, to protect residents' right to water.

Water committees in Licata and Canicattì have also called for the declaration of a state of calamity, citing daily per‑capita supplies far below the legal minimum of 150 L (often under 50 L). They criticize the monopoly water operator AICA and its partner ATI Idrico for inadequate service, rising costs, and a severe financial deficit of about €70 million, which hampers water purchases from Siciliacque and maintenance of the system. The committees warn of health risks, economic damage and social insecurity unless the emergency is formally recognised and remedial measures are taken.
