Agrigento water crisis highlighted in Italian Parliament

Five Star Movement deputy Ida Carmina presented a water container in the Chamber of Deputies to draw attention to the ongoing water shortage in Agrigento and its province. She said thousands of families are forced to fill jerrycans because household taps remain dry, describing the container as “the symbol of a fundamental right denied.”

Carmina noted that the government declared the water emergency over on 9 May, yet residents still face long queues, rotating supplies and insufficient replacement services. Despite €128 million spent, the Court of Auditors has identified severe mismanagement and the defunding of key projects such as the Pietrarossa dam and the Castello aqueduct, which are essential for Sicily’s water supply. The deputy urged the government to restore financing and find immediate alternative resources, but the administration has so far rejected the request.
