Agrigento water crisis prompts call for extra regional funding

Farmers and irrigation workers in Agrigento, Sicily, are confronting severe water shortages. Regional authorities were asked to allocate an additional €16 million on top of the €10 million already provided to cover irrigation fees for 2025 and to pay overdue wages for consorzi staff.

The Libero Consorzio Comunale of Agrigento has warned that the temporary increase of water flow by 60 litres per second, approved only for June, leaves the province uncertain about supplies for the peak summer tourism season. Local mayors have demanded an urgent meeting with regional president Renato Schifani and the water‑services department to secure reliable water deliveries and prevent economic and tourist fallout.
