Agrigento's Valle dei Templi to host open day for Ceramico excavations

The Valle dei Templi Archaeological Park in Agrigento will host an open day on Tuesday, September 22, to showcase ongoing excavations in the Ceramico area. Located west of Porta V, these excavations focus on the archaic and classical periods of the ancient city of Akragas.

Visitors will be guided by students and young scholars through the site to view structures and materials uncovered during recent research. The project, which began in 2019, is a collaborative effort between the University of Bologna and the Valle dei Templi Park. Recent findings include large ceramic production kilns that are noted for their exceptional size, complexity, and state of preservation, with no known comparable sites in Greek-era Sicily.

Regional Councilor for Cultural Heritage, Francesco Paolo Scarpinato, stated that the unique materials found allow for a deeper understanding of aspects of ancient Akragas that were previously little explored.
