Agrodefesa alerts for grapevine canker risk in Brazil

Agricultural authorities in Brazil are on high alert following the detection of grapevine canker in the Distrito Federal. The disease, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas citri pv. viticola, poses a significant threat to the expanding viticulture sector in the neighboring state of Goiás.

Agrodefesa, the Goiás agricultural defense agency, is working in cooperation with the Distrito Federal government to contain and eradicate the outbreak. Experts warn that the bacteria can be spread through the unauthorized transport of seedlings, seeds, and pruning tools. The disease is particularly concerning because it can reduce both the quality and productivity of grape harvests.

The alert comes as the wine industry in Goiás experiences growth. The state currently has 116 grape producers covering 410 hectares across 55 municipalities. Recent data indicates an increase in registered wineries in the region, highlighting the economic importance of protecting the sector from sanitary risks.
