Agroecology and food sovereignty initiatives highlighted in Chile and Cuba
Regional organizations and academic institutions in Chile and Cuba are advancing agroecology and food sovereignty through collaborative forums and scientific congresses.
In Chile, the Universidad del Bío-Bío hosted the 4th Interregional Meeting for Agroecology, Food Sovereignty, and Biocultural Heritage. Supported by the European Union and the TRES Project, the event brought together social organizations from Ñuble, Biobío, and La Araucanía. The gathering included discussions on seed defense and local knowledge, concluding with a seed and resource exchange fair to foster community alliances.
In Cuba, the IV International University-Society Scientific Congress (UNISOC 2026) addressed local food production based on agroecological principles. During the symposium, Anthius Hernández Gómez, rector of the University of Agrarian Sciences of La Habana, emphasized the role of higher education institutions in contributing to national food security. The event focused on integrating scientific and technological research with local production to support self-sufficiency amidst complex economic contexts.
