Agron Gjekmarkaj criticizes Albania's territorial reform

Agron Gjekmarkaj, Deputy Chairman of the Parliament and a Democratic Party deputy, has issued a sharp critique of the proposed administrative-territorial reform in Albania. During a parliamentary session, Gjekmarkaj accused the ruling majority of using the reform as a tool to maintain power rather than to improve local administration, strengthen autonomy, or facilitate European integration.

He characterized the reform as creating “administrative anarchy” and described the legislative process as a “legalized crime through voting.” Gjekmarkaj argued that the majority's actions are detrimental to the territory and its citizens, comparing their behavior to that of “conquerors.” He further suggested that behind the legal proposals for reform lie specific hidden interests and motives designed to preserve the current political status quo.
