Agrophotovoltaic projects expand in Germany and Spain

European agricultural sectors are increasingly adopting agrophotovoltaic systems, which allow for simultaneous food production and solar energy generation on the same land.

In Brandenburg, Germany, the Klimapark Steinhöfel project is being developed across approximately 500 hectares. The project aims for a total installed capacity of 753 MWp. Using bifacial glass modules mounted at a minimum height of 2.10 meters, the site will support crops, medicinal herbs, and livestock grazing. Construction of the first 106 MWp phase began in the final quarter of 2025.

In Andalusia, Spain, the companies Greening and Acesur have implemented a project in Vilches involving over 5,150 solar panels. To accommodate olive harvesting machinery, the panels are mounted on steel structures more than four meters high. This installation has a capacity of 3.65 MWp and includes a 3 MWh battery. The University of Jaén is monitoring the project as a laboratory to study how the panels affect water consumption, soil temperature, and plant growth compared to a control zone.
