Aguascalientes launches Mezcal and Agave Advisory Council to boost exports

Governor Tere Jiménez of Aguascalientes inaugurated the Consejo Consultivo del Mezcal y Derivados del Agave, a new advisory body aimed at strengthening the state's mezcal sector. The council will coordinate strategies among authorities and producers to improve certification, raise quality standards, and expand market presence both nationally and internationally.

The state reports about 1,300 hectares of cultivated agave and 700 hectares of wild agave, and has allocated roughly 13 million pesos to support the production chain through training, equipment, and promotion. Recent accolades at the Mundo Mezcal festival—Gran Oro and Bronze medals for two local mezcal labels—are highlighted as evidence of growing quality.

The initiative seeks to leverage Aguascalientes’ Denominación de Origen status to open new export opportunities and position the region’s mezcal as a globally recognized product.
