Aguascalientes launches new liver and bone marrow transplant protocols

In Aguascalientes, Mexico, the State Health Secretariat has launched liver and bone marrow transplant protocols at the Centenario Hospital Miguel Hidalgo. This initiative aims to reduce the medical gap and prevent patients from having to travel to other regions for treatment, following reports of 180 deaths among children and young people with leukemia in the state over the last eight years.

Rubén Galaviz Tristán, head of the Institute of Health Services of the State of Aguascalientes (ISSEA), stated that 6 million pesos in state funds were allocated to enable these services: 4 million pesos for the bone marrow unit and 2 million pesos for liver transplant equipment. The bone marrow unit is already operating with living donors and expects to handle 20 requests annually. The liver transplant program has begun patient selection and compatibility testing for cadaveric donation.

The state already maintains an active renal transplant program, which averages 88 interventions per year with an annual investment of approximately 100 million pesos.
