Maradona death trial enters decisive phase with medical expert testimony

The trial regarding the death of Diego Armando Maradona has entered a decisive phase in Argentina. This week, the court is hearing testimony from two key members of the Interdisciplinary Medical Board: toxicologist Carlos Damín and nephrologist Hernán Trimarchi. Their expertise is central to understanding the medical state of the former footballer prior to his death in November 2020.

Evidence presented during the proceedings suggests that Maradona suffered from chronic kidney disease. While histopathological studies ruled out the presence of alcohol and drugs in his body at the time of death, reports indicate that cocaine consumption may have been a contributing factor to his renal condition.

Testimony from medical experts, including forensic coordinator Carlos Mauricio Cassinelli, has highlighted that Maradona exhibited signs of heart failure—such as edema, shortness of breath, and tachycardia—that were allegedly not adequately monitored. Furthermore, evidence has emerged regarding orders from psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov to suspend nighttime vital sign checks during his home care, a decision described by investigators as highly counterproductive to his treatment.

Seven health professionals, including neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, face charges of simple homicide with eventual intent. The prosecution argues that there was a lack of continuous medical supervision during the period Maradona was under home care.
