Agustín Flah leaves Argentina's anti-money laundering coordination role
Agustín Flah, Argentina’s national coordinator for combating money laundering, terrorism financing, and the financing of weapons of mass destruction, has unexpectedly left his position. Flah served as the country’s practical representative to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF/GAFI) and GAFILAT, two key international bodies specialized in anti-money laundering efforts.
His departure comes shortly after both organizations voted to prevent Argentina from returning to the grey list of uncooperative jurisdictions. Flah had been in the role for only four months and had recently been appointed by FATF to the Americas Review Subgroup, which evaluates whether countries should be included in black or grey lists.
Conflicting accounts exist regarding the nature of his exit. Judicial sources suggest Flah was dismissed by Justice Minister Juan Bautista Mahiques. Conversely, Ministry spokespersons claim he resigned to return to private practice, citing insufficient salary to maintain his law firm. This exit raises concerns regarding policy continuity, as the administration of President Javier Milei has already seen three leadership changes within the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF).
