Ah Girl makes North American debut at Toronto International Film Festival

The Singaporean film Ah Girl, the directorial debut of Ang Geck Geck Priscilla, has made its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. Set in Singapore in 1994, the semi-autobiographical drama explores the impact of parental divorce through the eyes of a precocious seven-year-old girl named Swee Swee.

Led by a central performance from newcomer Ong Xuan Jing, the film depicts the domestic upheaval of a family in transition. As the protagonist's parents separate, she and her younger sister must navigate a home life where their grandmother provides much of the care while the adults struggle to communicate the reality of their situation. The film has previously received recognition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and has earned best actress awards for Ong at the Hong Kong and Malaysia International Film Festivals.
