Karabağlar and Şahinbey Municipalities Train Women in Advanced Textile Production

Karabağlar Municipality in İzmir launched a Textile Academy that began about six weeks ago. Fifty‑one women completed the program and attended a graduation ceremony where they modeled garments they had sewn themselves. Mayor Helil Kınay praised the initiative, saying, “Biz kendi mucizemizi yaratıyoruz. Doğru niyetle, doğru insanlarla bir araya geldiğimizde umut da büyüyor, üretim de büyüyor,” and described the academy as “a brand” that builds confidence and economic independence.

In Gaziantep, Şahinbey Municipality runs a “Seri Üretim Tekstil Atölyesi” at the Şehit Taner Cinpolat Social Facility. The course goes beyond basic sewing, teaching cost planning, industrial cutting, machine operation, quality control, ironing and packaging. Graduates have begun selling their products on social media, contributing to family incomes and creating their own businesses. Mayor Mehmet Tahmazoğlu highlighted the project’s role in providing lasting solutions, noting that women’s new skills add qualified labor to the local textile sector.

Both municipalities aim to empower women, increase their economic participation, and address the demand for skilled workers in Turkey’s textile industry.
