Ahmad Shah Massoud assassinated by al-Qaeda two days before 9/11

Ahmad Shah Massoud, the Afghan military leader known as the ‘Lion of Panjshir,’ was assassinated by al-Qaeda operatives on September 9, 2001, just two days before the September 11 attacks.

Massoud, a prominent commander of the United Islamic Front for the Salvation of Afghanistan (the Northern Alliance), was killed when two operatives posing as journalists detonated explosives hidden in a camera battery pack during an interview. The assassination was reportedly ordered by Osama bin Laden to weaken the Northern Alliance and prevent Massoud from warning Western powers about impending al-Qaeda plots.

Massoud gained international recognition for his leadership in the resistance against Soviet forces in the 1980s and his subsequent opposition to the Taliban. Following his death, the Northern Alliance, supported by U.S. military and intelligence personnel, eventually succeeded in ousting the Taliban from Kabul.
