Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urges constitutional understanding regarding royal institutions

Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the public to avoid labeling actions as ‘treasonous’ or ‘rude’ without first understanding the constitutional roles of various institutions. Speaking at the Musyawarah Nasional: Membongkar Polemik Tanah Melayu in Melaka, Zahid emphasized that disputes involving royal institutions and state laws must be evaluated based on the legal standing and responsibilities of each entity, as well as the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Zahid, who also serves as the President of UMNO, stated that political differences should not erode respect for the monarchy. He reaffirmed that UMNO upholds the royal institutions and the Federal Constitution, including the pardoning powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers. He stressed that respect for the Constitution must remain steadfast, even when decisions do not align with personal or political desires.

Additionally, Zahid highlighted the importance of fostering historical consciousness among the younger generation, noting that the history of the Malay Peninsula predates colonial arrival through early developments such as Kedah Tua, Lembah Bujang, and Sungai Batu.
