Ahmed Adeeb settles MVR 1M fine in MMPRC corruption case

The Maldives Civil Court has concluded a case against former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb following the settlement of a MVR 1 million fine. The fine was part of a MVR 2 million total penalty imposed by the Criminal Court in 2020 after Adeeb pleaded guilty to charges related to the MMPRC corruption scandal.

The state had filed a case in the Civil Court to recover the outstanding balance after the initial one-month payment deadline passed. Court records indicate that Adeeb paid MVR 100,000 in September 2025 and settled the remaining MVR 900,000 in August of the same year. Following these payments, the Attorney General’s Office requested the court to confirm that the judgment had been fully enforced.

The MMPRC scandal involved the embezzlement of significant state funds, with estimates of losses ranging from MVR 1.5 billion to over MVR 2 billion. Adeeb previously served part of his sentence under house arrest due to health reasons and received a presidential pardon from former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in November 2023, which reduced his remaining sentence to four days.
