Ahmed Al-Zarqa rejects Vietnam War comparisons to Yemen conflict

Journalist and writer Ahmed Al-Zarqa has issued a rebuttal to a Newsweek article by Tom O'Connor titled ‘Will Yemen Become Saudi Arabia’s Vietnam?’, arguing that the comparison is historically and practically inaccurate.

Al-Zarqa contends that the conflict did not begin with the Saudi intervention in March 2015, but rather with the Houthi takeover of Sanaa and state institutions in September 2014. He emphasizes that the Houthis are an armed group with a specific political project and should not be viewed as representatives of the Yemeni people.

Regarding military scale, Al-Zarqa notes that while the U.S. deployed over 543,000 troops to Vietnam by 1969, the Saudi role has primarily focused on air support, logistics, and weaponry to assist Yemeni forces. He also disputes the relevance of the Egyptian experience in Yemen, noting that Egyptian forces intervened to support the republic rather than as an occupying force.
