Ahmed Raissouni clarifies controversial remarks on Mauritania

Ahmed Raissouni, former president of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, has issued a clarification regarding his recent controversial statements concerning the historical relationship between Morocco and Mauritania. Raissouni stated that his comments, which touched upon historical ties, were made “spontaneously” in response to a sudden question and do not reflect a formal diplomatic assessment.

In his explanation, Raissouni emphasized that he holds no official government or diplomatic position and does not represent any state entity. He maintained that his remarks were based on historical documents and scholarly works that are subject to debate and scrutiny. He further clarified that his comments were not intended to impact current diplomatic realities or call for changes to the existing relations between the two nations.

While Raissouni praised the intelligence and eloquence of the Mauritanian people in response to the backlash, he did not issue a formal apology for the content of his statements. He also expressed support for the Arab Maghreb Union, suggesting that regional integration remains a goal despite current obstacles.
