Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Completes High‑Risk Hip Replacement for ITP Patient

Ahmedabad Civil Hospital in Gujarat successfully performed a total hip replacement on Sangeeta Trivedi, a patient from Uttar Pradesh suffering from Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). The disorder caused a critically low platelet count, making surgery extremely risky due to potential severe bleeding. Prolonged steroid treatment for ITP had also led to avascular necrosis of her hip, necessitating the replacement.

A multidisciplinary team from orthopaedics, haematology, anaesthesia and the blood bank planned the operation. During surgery the patient received five units of platelets, one unit of fresh frozen plasma and one unit of packed red cells to control bleeding. The procedure was completed without major complications and the patient is now recovering and able to walk independently.

Medical Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi and Professor Dr Piyush Mittal said the operation demonstrates the Gujarat Government’s commitment to delivering advanced, affordable, high‑quality care in government hospitals, contrasting with private facilities that had declined to operate due to the high risk and cost.
