Ahmedabad crackdown on gold fraud and smuggling operations
Police in Gujarat arrested two jewellery operators, Ghanshyam Soni and Yash Soni, after they allegedly duped about 40 local investors of roughly Rs 10.67 crore by promising high returns on silver investments. The accused, linked to the Hari Jewellers showroom in Dholka, are accused of collecting deposits and then absconding, prompting a case under the Gujarat Protection of Interest of Depositors Act and related sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Separately, the Ahmedabad Customs Air Intelligence Unit seized gold jewellery worth approximately ₹35.5 lakh from a woman arriving from Dubai at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The seizure, involving 240.8 grams of 24‑carat gold, is part of a series of recent detections of gold smuggling at the airport, with similar seizures reported in late July.
