Ahmedabad factory sealed for manufacturing adulterated tomato ketchup
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Health Department has sealed a factory in the Gota area of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, following allegations of food adulteration. The facility, identified as Aai Shri Khodiyar Grih Udyog in Meldi Estate, was raided after reports surfaced that tomato ketchup was being manufactured using potato-based paste instead of actual tomatoes.
According to Food Safety Officer Mahendra Patel, the production process involved converting potatoes into a paste and then into a powder. This powder was reportedly mixed with water, artificial colors, and flavors to create products marketed as tomato ketchup, chutney, and syrup.
During the operation, officials seized a total of 10,630 kg of items, including approximately 5,000 kg of finished products ready for market sale and over 5,000 kg of raw materials. The raid uncovered large stainless-steel mixing vessels, packaged sachets, and plastic drums containing various substances.
