Ahmedabad to host 2029 IWF World Weightlifting Championships

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2029 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships. This marks the first time the global weightlifting competition will be held in India.

The decision was confirmed by the IWF Executive Board on October 25 during a meeting in Ningbo, China. The event follows a trend of major sporting competitions in the region, including the Asian Weightlifting Championships held in Gandhinagar in 2026 and the upcoming 2030 Commonwealth Games scheduled for Ahmedabad.

Indian Olympic Association President P. T. Usha described the selection as a “proud moment for Indian sport,” noting that hosting elite athletes on home soil could inspire a new generation of Indian weightlifters. Sahdev Yadav, President of the Indian Weightlifting Federation, also characterized the announcement as a significant milestone for the sport in India.
