Muğla Mayor Ahmet Aras to visit Syria for reconstruction cooperation

Ahmet Aras, Mayor of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality and Chair of the UCLG-MEWA Culture and Tourism Committee, is undertaking a working visit to Syria from September 19 to 23. The mission aims to strengthen inter-local government relations and explore cooperation in culture, tourism, agriculture, trade, and investment to support Syria’s reconstruction process.

The itinerary includes Damascus, Homs, and Aleppo. In Damascus, Aras will meet with the Governor of Damascus and the Turkish Embassy in Damascus to discuss mutual cooperation. In Homs, discussions will involve the Governor and Mayor, including visits to the Hassia Industrial City. In Aleppo, meetings with local officials will focus on trade, industry, and reconstruction. The visit also includes inspections at the Latakia Marina and aims to integrate Syrian cities into the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) network.

Separately, Aras participated in the ‘Before COP31 Turkey Dialogues Summit’ in Ankara. He emphasized the role of local governments in combating the climate crisis and discussed Muğla’s initiatives in renewable energy, water efficiency, and waste management. He highlighted the importance of local governments forming a collective voice ahead of COP31 and announced that Muğla will host the Mediterranean Climate Summit in late September.
