Ahmet Turan preserves weaving craft in Rize despite visual impairment
Ahmet Turan, a visually impaired artisan living in the Güneysu district of Rize, has spent nearly half a century preserving the craft of motif weaving. Turan lost his sight following a bout of meningitis in 1961, which he attributes to a misdiagnosis due to a lack of pediatric specialists in the region at the time.
Despite his disability, Turan has mastered the ability to create complex patterns by counting stitches with his fingertips. He maintains a high level of precision, noting that he can feel even the slightest deviation in a pattern and will unravel and restart his work to ensure accuracy.
