AHMSA workers march in Monclova to demand auction completion
Ex-workers of the steel company Altos Hornos de México (AHMSA) held a march in Monclova to demand the completion of the company's auction, scheduled for September 25. The demonstration, organized by the Grupo de Defensa Laboral de Trabajadores de AHMSA, highlighted internal divisions among the former employees. Ervey Valenzuela, a leader of a group maintaining a protest camp at the steel plants, noted that workers are no longer as united as before and reported being asked not to participate in the mobilization.
The local business community has also expressed support for the workers. The Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism of Monclova reported that its 1,430 member businesses, 80% of which are family-owned, have faced economic difficulties due to the AHMSA paralysis over the last four years. Dr. Oscar Mario Medina, representing the private sector, expressed solidarity with the workers and voiced hope for a resolution by December to provide stability for the families affected by the crisis.
