Ahn Cheol-soo demands dismissal of basic pension reform plan

Ahn Cheol-soo, a member of the People Power Party, has strongly criticized the South Korean government's proposed basic pension reform plan, calling it a 'violence' against the 50-60 age demographic and demanding its immediate dismissal.

The controversy centers on a proposed shift in eligibility criteria. Currently, the basic pension is provided to the bottom 70% of elderly earners. The government's plan seeks to transition this to a system based on the standard median income, specifically targeting 80% of that median. Ahn argues this change would significantly raise the threshold for receiving benefits, potentially leaving many current recipients with nothing.

Furthermore, the reform proposes a tiered payment structure. While the lowest income brackets might see increased payments, Ahn contends that freezing payments for higher brackets effectively constitutes a reduction in value when accounting for inflation. The Ministry of Health and Welfare recently canceled a scheduled briefing on the matter, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the final details of the proposal.
