Ahome authorities respond to machete brawl in El Jitzámuri
A violent confrontation involving machetes occurred during Fisherman's Day celebrations in the fishing community of El Jitzámuri, Ahome, in the early hours of Sunday, October 11, 2026. The brawl, which took place at a local community court, reportedly left six people injured, some with significant wounds. Video footage from the scene showed individuals fighting with blades and a vehicle allegedly driving into participants, prompting others to throw stones at the car.
Ahome Mayor Antonio Menéndez de Llano Bermúdez addressed the incident, noting that while security forces were present during the festivities, the violence erupted as the celebration concluded. He revealed that the organizers had not obtained the necessary municipal permits for alcohol sales.
In response, the municipal government announced it will resume working meetings with local syndics and commissioners to improve prevention in rural areas. Moving forward, the administration will strictly require formal permits for alcohol sales and the official request of security presence for all community events to prevent similar occurrences.
