AHPRA accused of failing to investigate medical negligence
The Australian Healthcare Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is facing criticism from patients regarding its handling of medical negligence and misconduct allegations. Patients report a lack of transparency in the complaints process, noting that some cases are dismissed without investigation or explanation.
Reports indicate that the agency has failed to act on multiple complaints, including those involving surgeries performed by Melbourne gynaecologist Simon Gordon. While Gordon maintains he acted “ethically and responsibly,” colleagues have suggested the agency failed to take necessary action.
Additional grievances include the use of pro forma letters in response to personal testimonials and a lack of trauma-informed communication from agency staff. This follows previous scrutiny of the agency’s performance during investigations into cosmetic surgery complications.
